Dance Department is the only department statewide, regionally or nationally to have a course in Vintage Jazz as part of the required curriculum.

Of the Music Department’s faculty - three are Music Directors in local churches.

Visiting critics have included Rafael Moneo of Madrid, Glen Murcutt of Australia, Nader, Tehrani of Boston, ShOP in New York, Rick Joy of Tucson, Brian MacKay-Lyons of Nova Scotia, and more.

Of the Music Department’s faculty - one is former alto sax player with the Harry Connick Orchestra.

The SoA is located in Storrs Hall, designed in 1990-92 by Charles Gwathmey, FAIA (1938-2009) of Gwathmey Siegel & Associates in New York. Born in Charlotte, NC.

Over 25% of the student body in the SoA participate in study abroad opportunities. Recent cities include Spain, Shanghai, the Netherlands, Rome, and more.

The Department of Dance established the 1st undergraduate certificate at UNC Charlotte in 1999 with its Professional Training Certificate in Dance partnering with the North Carolina Dance Theatre

The SoA is comprised of approximately 250 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, with 25 full-time faculty and approximately 10 visiting instructors.

Of the Music Department’s faculty - eleven perform with the Charlotte Symphony.

Advanced undergraduate and graduate students have opportunities to engage in faculty research during their course of study.

The SoA incorporates “field trip week” each semester, with opportunities to travel with faculty to cities around the country. Recent visits include NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and more.

Students gain practical experience to develop as scholars and artists.

The Department’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble has grown to be one of the finest college bands in the Southeast.

Of the Music Department’s faculty - one is an acclaimed Bosendorfer piano artist and co-author of a widely used text for piano pedagogy.

To become a licensed architect, an individual must possess a Professional degree in architecture from a program accredited by NAAB.

Of the Music Department’s faculty - one is the Vice president of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

The Department’s string program has grown rapidly to include three orchestras, and an extensive chamber music program.

Of the Music Department’s faculty - one formerly led the House Band for the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.

The Department of Music generates over 60 performances annually.

The University Chorale recently completed a its first-ever international tour, performing in Rome, Venice, Florence, and other Italian cities.

Since 2002, the Master of Architecture Student Society (MASS) has staged CriticalMASS, an all-day symposium of thesis work from Schools of Architecture in the Southeast.

The SoA is only 1 of 2 architecture programs in the country that offer a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Architecture, and a Master of Architecture within the same School.

The BA in Dance Education with courses in place since 1978, is one of the two first programs licensing teachers in dance education in the North Carolina.

The SoA was recognized by “Architect Magazine” as one of the top five design build programs in the country.
