Charlotte Philharmonia

An initiative of the Carolinas Orchestral Leadership Academy at UNC Charlotte, the Philharmonia is a string repertory orchestra. Open to all members of the public, age 14 and up, the ensemble provides a positive and supportive environment for string players wishing to continue their involvement in music in a fun and low-pressure setting. Students from public, private, and home schools are especially welcome.

AUDITIONS: Auditions are not required for Philharmonia. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be age 14 or above as of the date of the first rehearsal (August 31, 2016) in order to participate. There is no upper age limit.

SCHEDULE: The Philharmonia is offered in 12-week sessions in both Fall and Spring semesters. Participants may register for one or both sessions. Rehearsals are held Wednesday nights from 6:30-9:00 pm in Room 210 of Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts, on the campus of UNC Charlotte.

Fall 2016:
Rehearsals every Wednesday, August 31 through November 16. A final dress rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, November 16, followed by a concert at 7:30 pm in Rowe Recital Hall.

Spring 2017:
Rehearsals every Wednesday, January 18 through March 1 and March 15 - Apr 12. (There is no rehearsal on March 9). A final dress rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, April 12, followed by a concert at 7:30 pm in Rowe Recital Hall.

TUITION: Tuition is $100 per semester for participants not currently enrolled at UNC Charlotte. Participants registering for both semesters by September 7 will pay a reduced rate of $180. Tuition includes all costs of participation, including music fees, clinics, and parking vouchers. Only one set of parking vouchers per address will be issued. Parking vouchers will be distributed at each rehearsal.

Tuition fees are not refundable after the second rehearsal of each semester.  For students enrolling for both semesters, tuition fees will not be refunded after after the second rehearsal of the first semester.

Application and Registration


Participants not currently enrolled at UNC Charlotte must complete and submit the online registration form. Payment in full is due at the time of submission. Only payment by credit card is accepted.

A parent or legal guardian must complete the waiver of liability for all applicants under the age of 18. The waiver of liability must be submitted at or before the first rehearsal. No minor will be permitted to participate without a completed and signed waiver on file.

Participants currently enrolled at UNC Charlotte must register for the course (MUPF 1168 – 1 credit), pay the appropriate tuition and fees directly to the University, and adhere to the requirements set forth in the course syllabus. No further documentation or payment is required. Parking is not included for UNC Charlotte students.



The Philharmonia adheres to the attendance and punctuality policies of the Orchestra area at UNC Charlotte. All absences or late arrivals must be communicated AND excused in advance, except in the rare event of a family or medical emergency. Tuning will commence at 6:30 pm, and it is expected that every participant be seated and ready to tune at that time. Absences and late arrivals are excused solely at the discretion of the instructor.

For participants not enrolled at UNC Charlotte, non-attendance without the approval of the instructor may result in withdrawal from the ensemble and forfeiture of all fees. Participants repeatedly arriving late may also be dismissed from the ensemble at the instructor’s discretion, with forfeiture of all fees.


Tuxedo: white dress shirt, black jacket, black dress pants, black socks black bowtie, optional black cummerbund or vest

Long black dress apparel: ankle length skirt or dress, or black dress pants, solid black dress shirt with ¾ to full length sleeves, and neckline at or above the collarbone. Black hose or socks as appropriate.
