Master of Architecture II

Two professionally NAAB-accredited graduate degrees in Architecture are available in the School of Architecture at UNC Charlotte:  The Master of Architecture I and the Master of Architecture II.

The Master of Architecture II (M.Arch. II) is designed for those who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree in Architecture from a NAAB-accredited institution.  The M.Arch. II is a full-time program that is two years in length (60 credit hours). 

If applicants accepted to the M.Arch. II program are found deficient in entry-level competencies, they will be required to enroll in additional course work beyond the required 60 credit hours to complete their degree.  To ensure that incoming students are evaluated appropriately, the School of Architecture may request from applicants to the M.Arch. II program the submission of course descriptions and syllabi of architecture courses passed and completed that satisfy the entry-level competencies.

Expected Entry-Level Competencies for M.Arch. II Candidates:

  1. A minimum of six semesters of architectural design studios;
  2. A minimum of two semesters of architectural history and/or theory courses;
  3. A minimum of four semesters of building technology courses equivalent to the following School of Architecture courses:
  • Material and Assembly Principles (ARCH 5301)
  • Environmental Systems Principles (ARCH 5302)
  • Structural Principles (ARCH 5303)
  • Structural Systems (ARCH 5304)

The Master of Architecture II application process consists of the following steps and components:

Application to UNC Charlotte

Submit the following application materials by January 15th, 2014 to the UNC Charlotte Office of Graduate Admissions:

  1. Online Graduate School Application available from the UNC Charlotte Office of Graduate Admissions and Application Fee (payable online)
  2. Official transcripts from all previous college-level institution(s) to UNC Charlotte Office of Graduate Admissions
  3. Official GRE (and TOEFL if applicable) test scores
  4. Statement of Purpose that explains your reasons for wanting to be admitted to the School of Architecture
  5. Three recommendations from persons familiar with the applicant's personal and professional qualifications
  6. Resume or Curriculum Vitae (.pdf document upload)
  7. Portfolio (.pdf document upload)

A digital portfolio is the preferred format for item no. 7 above; however, applicants may submit a paper portfolio as an option.  The format for the paper portfolio is as follows:

8-1/2 x 11 bound portfolio of design/creative work (Portfolios will ONLY BE RETURNED IF YOU PROVIDE an oversized, self-addressed, return postage envelope acording to US Postal Service and/or Express Mail Standards).  Applicants should submit examples of their previous work.  This could include writing (such as papers, articles, etc.) creative work (art, photography, etc.) or anything else that will give the review committee a sense of accomplishment and creative aptitude.  The portfolio should be addressed as follows:

IMPORTANT: The deadline for receipt of your completed application to UNC Charlotte Office of Graduate Admissions is January 15th, 2014.

Applicants are responsible to make sure that all of their materials have been submitted by the final application deadline.  Your application cannot be reviewed until all required parts of the application are received.  It is critical that applicants check their online application frequently after submitting the required materials to insure everything has been received.  If the online record indicates a "referred status" then the application is complete and our Admissions Committee will begin the review process.

Automatic Admission for SoA Students

Students who complete professional track of the four-year Bachelor of Arts in Architecture Degree Program (including 4th year studios) at UNC Charlotte and meet the following criteria will be awarded automatic admission to the Master of Architecture II Degree Program:

  1. Students must complete their undergraduate degree with a 3.25 grade point average in Architecture.
  2. Students must complete their undergraduate degree with a 3.0 grade point average overall.
  3. Students must fulfill the University's Graduate School application requirements, which includes the online application and submission of GRE scores.

UNC Charlotte students who do not meet these grade point average requirements may submit a full application for admission to the UNC Charlotte Office of Graduate Admissions for consideration.
