CoAA Presents Lost and Found: The Reconstruction of Imperial Gesture

January 14, 2013

Two years ago, Assistant Professor of Dance Kim Jones, a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, was asked by the Graham Company to reconstruct a lost Graham solo, Imperial Gesture. With support from a UNC Charlotte Faculty Research Grant, Jones was able to assemble a team of artists to research and realize the dance, featuring Graham Company principal dancer Blakeley White-McGuire originating the role that Graham herself danced in 1935. It receives its premiere in Charlotte this week.

Prior to the January 18 performance by the Martha Graham Dance Company at the Knight Theater, the members of the creative team will speak about the process of reanimation in a panel discussion, Lost and Found: The Reconstruction of Imperial Gesture. This pre-concert conversation will take place in the Knight Theater at 7 pm and will feature Jones, dramaturg Jeanmarie Higgins, costume designer Karen Young, composer and pianist Patrick Daugherty, and lighting designer Judith Daitsman.
