Faculty Research Connections Profile

Eric Sauda is a registered architect and professor of architecture who specializes in the use of digital and computational technologies and their transformative effect on architecture. Professor Sauda also teaches in the Charlotte Vis Center and the School of Data Science at UNC Charlotte. His research interests include interactive environments, digitally augmented performance, and social media in architecture and urban settings. His work has been published in the Journal of Architecture Education, Journal of American Planning Association, New Media & Society, Social Media + Society, The Routledge Companion to Critical Approaches to Contemporary Architecture, and Planning Support Science for Smarter Urban Futures. In 2021 Routledge published the book Social Media and the Contemporary City, which Sauda co-authored with School of Architecture graduate program alumni Ali  Karduni and Ginette Wessel.

Social Media and the Contemporary City: Sauda's recent publication focuses on the effects of social media on local communities and urban space in a variety of political and economic settings related to social activism, informal economic activity, public art, and global extremism.

LEGIBLE CITIES: Focus-Dependent Multi-Resolution Visualization of Urban Relationships: Eric Sauda and Ginette Wessel are in collaboration with Bill Robarsky, Remco Chang of the VIS Center. This project uses an algorithm developed by Chang to study urban form in a range of cities from different historical periods.
