How did you become interested in dance?
What launched my interest in dance? Wow, that's a loaded question... Ever since I can remember, at least once a week my family would have dance parties - this is common within Hispanic culture. We would always dance salsa, merengue, etc. This was my first exposure to dance, music, and community. I suppose it was the feeling of community and the culture behind the movement that really sparked my interest in dance. I didn't come to learn this until recently when I decided to switch from a dance minor to a dance major. It was learning a way to communicate through movement (or stillness) to express non-verbally what your soul wants to tell the world.
What are your plans when you graduate? What kind of career do you hope to have?
Performance will always be part of my life no matter where the road takes me. At the moment, my aspirations are to graduate and get accepted into a school for physical therapy, but I would not be opposed to being part of an amazing company like Diavolo, or performing on Broadway.
What is your favorite thing about the College of Arts + Architecture?
My favorite thing about the COA+A is the community of artists always present and striving to do their best. There are always architecture students up all night working hard on their projects, dancers choreographing at all hours of the day in the studios, musicians and vocalist practicing their craft anywhere they can find the space even if it’s in the halls or out front in the lawn, and actors making any open space their stage. Any time I walk over to this side of the campus, I just feel at home and filled with creative light.
Do you participate in any community cultural activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
I am a member of the Charlotte Royals Rugby Football Club which is part of International Gay Rugby (IGR), an all-inclusive sports organization that provides opportunities for members of the LGBT community and its straight allies to play the sport of rugby in an environment where a community can be formed without homophobia. Every two years, the Bingham Cup (Gay Rugby World Cup) is played either in the US or overseas, and teams from all over the world compete for the trophy. This May it will be held in Nashville. The tournament is a memorial to Mark Bingham, a former player of the San Francisco Fog RFC, who is said to be one of the passengers in United Flight 93 to have fought back the hijackers on September 11, 2001 ultimately stopping the plane from attacking Washington D.C.. For work, I perform in Charlotte whenever cast. This summer I'm a company member at CPCC Summer Theatre 2016 performing in Annie (Ensemble), Chicago (Mary Sunshine), Disney’s Aladdin Jr. (Aladdin), and Sister Act (Pablo).
When you are not in class, studying, working or rehearsing, what do you like to do for fun?
I'm a huge geek and I love to travel. With that said, I'm mostly playing video games at home or out exploring the world doing some photography. I love to go hiking, caving, skydiving, explore a new city, etc. and take pictures. Where ever I am I try to have a camera with me.
