What launched your interest in dance?
My mom tells me that I always wanted to dance - even before I could walk!  Unfortunately, as a child I was diagnosed with stage IV liver cancer and had to undergo a lot of chemotherapy. Severe hearing loss was expected to follow the treatment, so my doctors suggested that I get involved in something that offered an alternative form of communication. Several dance classes later, I found myself lucky enough to keep most of my hearing and find an enormous passion for dance!

What are your plans when you graduate? What kind of career do you hope to have?
No matter where I go following graduation, I know I will be performing! I've considered many different routes, including auditioning for contemporary ballet companies, Broadway shows, and cruise line work. At the end of the day, I know I will be happy anywhere as long as I'm on stage!

What is your favorite thing about the College of Arts + Architecture or the dance department?
Something that stands out to me about the UNC Charlotte dance department is the diversity of training and dancers they have to offer! When I was looking at options for school, I found that many programs produce dancers that all have the same "look." At UNC Charlotte, our personal strengths are recognized and we are encouraged to become artists, not just performers. Being in this culturally rich environment has expanded my horizons in ways I never would have imagined!

Do you participate in any community cultural activities or work in the Charlotte community?
Yes! One of my favorite events in the Charlotte community is the Make-A-Wish "Walk for Wishes" that comes uptown each October. The dance department brings a team every year and fundraises throughout the fall. Anyone can join the team, and its been a great way to build relationships across the department all while giving back!

When you are not in class, studying, or working in the studio, what do you like to do for fun?
One huge advantage to living in Charlotte is having access to all of the shows that come through on tour! I love going to dance performances, Broadway shows, and music concerts whenever I get the chance.  Most of them offer student discounted tickets, so it's affordable too!
