If you are looking for inspirational training that will prepare you for the demands of the professional world, you have come to the right place! As a music major at UNC Charlotte, you will work with faculty members who are nationally recognized for their artistry, scholarship, and pedagogical expertise. Our department stresses small class sizes and personal instruction from these highly respected professors, not their graduate students. The curriculum stresses faculty-mentored individual studies in music while also emphasizing the benefits offered by a major research university.
Our students perform in a variety of bands, choirs, and orchestras, as well as chamber ensembles, jazz ensembles, and opera and musical theatre productions. These groups perform on campus as well as throughout the Charlotte region and the state of North Carolina. Recent international performances have taken our students to Italy, Spain, England, Scotland, Israel, and New Zealand. Students interested in music research have presented work at university symposia as well as at state and national conferences. All of these events take place in beautiful classrooms, studios, rehearsal halls, and performance halls in Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts and the adjacent Rowe Arts Building.
The Department of Music hosts over 100 events every year, ranging from student concerts to lectures and recitals by faculty members and guest artists. Our masterclass series brings internationally renowned guest artists to our campus to work with our students.
