The Department of Art & Art History and Rowe Galleries present a reception for two concurrent exhibitions: Written Images: Communication Media by Cynthia Frank and Drawing Connection: Drawings from The Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts and Design. These exhibitions are on view in Rowe Galleries, January 8-February 7.
Drawing Connection is an exhibition of drawings by undergraduate and graduate students from The Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Wroclaw, Poland, our partner institution. Figure Drawing studios at the Academy are meeting points for an intersection of students from different classes/levels, departments, and areas. Advanced sessions with models are open-ended: there are no assignments, and students generate their own ideas and manipulate the form while they investigate tools and mediums. Rooted in direct observation, which is often treated just as a departure point, the drawings are interpretative, expressive, and involve experimentation.
The drawings in this exhibition were gathered by Geppert Academy drawing professors Marlena Promna- Pietrek, Ph.D. and Jaroslaw Grulkowski, Ph.D. This exhibition has been organized with help from Maja Godlewska, associate professor of art at UNC Charlotte. This exhibition is on view in Rowe Lower Gallery.
The written word has traditionally been set down on a structured page, from the grids of religious scrolls and printed books to the prefab templates of digital communication. The work of Cynthia Flaxman Frank explores the painterly potential of language and image that plays with, redefines or altogether disregards this norm. Decontextualized symbols and mass-produced icons that evoke personal memories are reimagined as written landscapes, ambiguous texts, and abstract open visual dialogue. The resulting images, in large-scale oil paintings and smaller mixed media works on paper, comprise the unique pages of her particular narrative.
Cynthia Frank, a lecturer in the Department of Art & Art History, received a B.A. in English and an M.F.A in graphic design from Yale University. She is the owner of Cynthia Frank Design, and Partner in PAC3, an award-winning public art collaboration.
This exhibition is on view in Rowe Upper Gallery.
