The Department of Art & Art History and Rowe Galleries present Working Title: 2020, an exhibition of work by art faculty and staff now on view in Rowe Arts by appointment and online in our virtual gallery.

Working Title: 2020 features a diverse array of recent work – paintings, drawings, sculpture, textile art, digital design, photography, mixed media, and more – offering insight into what faculty have been working on in their own studios during a season of social separation and change. Exhibiting artists include Malena Bergmann, David Brodeur, J.B. Burke, Keith Bryant, Bobby Campbell, Jane Dalton, Shelley Ellis, Cynthia Flaxman Frank, Jamie Franki, Heather Freeman, Maja Godlewska, Aspen Hochhalter, Eldred Hudson, Anna Kenar, Kit Kube, Andrew Leventis, Jonathan Pellitteri, Marek Ranis, Kristin Rothrock, Thomas Schmidt, Lydia C. Thompson, and Erik Waterkotte.

“For most artists, the studio experience has been altered during the recent months of isolation,” writes Director of Galleries Adam Justice in an introduction to the exhibition. ”Studios are no longer just private creative spaces, but online classrooms, offices, and virtual meeting rooms. But, does that change the practice? What exactly goes on behind those studio doors when virtual conferencing ends?”

Like the artists themselves, the exhibition experience has adapted to the new environment that COVID-19 has wrought. Viewers can see the works in two ways: through the photography of Toby Shearer in a “virtual gallery” and in person in the Rowe Lower Gallery, by appointment. The Rowe Galleries are open Monday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm. To schedule a visit, contact Assistant Director of Galleries Heather Felts at hfelts@uncc.edu.

Working Title: 2020 will be on view through November 4. Regular gallery visitation, in accordance with social distancing and occupancy guidelines, is scheduled to resume when the University opens on October 1. Please visit the Rowe Galleries webpage for up-to-date information.
