Wednesday, January 2, 2019

A recent article by Dr. Carl DuPont, assistant professor of voice, identifies some of the first African American professors of singing to integrate the faculties of notable higher education music departments in the United States. “Make the Door Open: Groundbreaking African American Teachers of Singing” appears in the current Journal of Voice and Speech Review, published on December 5, 2018.

Dr. DuPont’s scholarly interest focuses on transformative inclusion in higher music education, specifically the contributions of Black musicians, composers, and educators to the discipline. A bass-baritone, he released The Reaction, a CD of songs by Black composers, in August, which American Record Guide called “a special album that brings deserved attention to these fine composers.” Learn more and hear a selection from the album here.
