Friday, September 23, 2016

Assistant Professor of Dance Rachel Barker will present her new work, “Back of [Y]our Neck,” as part of Emergence, an evening of dance presented by The Triangle Dance Project on Saturday, October 1, in Durham, NC. Barker will perform the duet with Audrey Rachelle, a guest artist from New York City.

“Back of [Y]our Neck,” which Barker choreographed the over the summer, was funded in part by a UNC Charlotte Faculty Research Grant. In it, she delves into the physical, sensory, and cognitive attentions that occur while making choices in the moment, in order to determine how to achieve a maximum state of awareness and engagement while dancing. “Back of [Y]our Neck” was performed at the 17th Annual Bill Evans Teachers Institute/4th Annual Somatic Dance Conference and Performance Festival in Geneva, NY, in July.

Barker joined the Department of Dance in Fall 2015 and serves as the Dance Education Coordinator. She was recently named the 2016 North Carolina Dance Alliance Choreography Fellow.
