Will CampellDr. Will Campbell, Director of Jazz Studies and Associate Professor of Saxophone, performs on two CDs that are being released in March. Campbell is a co-leader of the Unhinged Sextet, and their inaugural recording, Clarity, is now available on OA2 Records. This project was partially funded by a UNC Charlotte Faculty Research Grant and was recorded in Tempe, Arizona, in July of 2014. The recording features original music by band members, including three tracks by Campbell: “Down South,” “Leaving Soon,” and “Las Palmas.”

Dr. Campbell was also invited to be a band member and featured soloist on the Michael Waldrop Big Band's recording, Time Within Itself, for Origin Records. This project was recorded in Dallas, Texas, in July of 2014. Both CDs are receiving wide airplay on jazz stations.

Dr. Campbell has performed with artists such as Marvin Stamm, Randy Brecker, Aretha Franklin, Bobby Shew, Pete Christlieb, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Natalie Cole, Doc Severinsen, Louie Bellson, and ensembles such as The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony, Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, and Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra. Dr. Campbell was previously awarded a UNC Charlotte Faculty Research Grant in 2007 to record Think Tank (Cellar Live Records), his debut release as a leader and composer. In the review of Think Tank for All About Jazz, Raul d'Gama Rose stated, "Campbell is always meticulous in his pace, letting his warm, fat tone sing out as he constructs solos of breathtaking resonance."
