Dr. Jae Emerling, an associate professor in the Department of Art & Art History, is one of this year’s five finalists for the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence, one of the University’s most prestigious honors. The 2016 award winner will be announced on Friday, September 9, at a ceremony to be held at the Hilton Charlotte Center City.
The Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence was first presented in 1968 to recognize outstanding faculty members at UNC Charlotte. In order to be eligible for the award, a faculty member must be tenured, must be on the UNC Charlotte faculty for seven years, and must be teaching in the year that the award is given. Forty-two professors were nominated for the 2016 award.
Emerling teaches courses on contemporary art, history of photography, modernism, critical theory, art history methodology, and aesthetics. He is also the director of the Honors Program in the College of Arts + Architecture. He received his Ph.D. in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles, and is the author of Theory for Art History (2005) and the award-winning Photography: History and Theory (2012), both published by Routledge. The other finalists for the award are Anita Blanchard, associate professor of psychology and organization science; Matthew Davies, professor of mechanical engineering and engineering science; Janos Gergely, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering; and Daniel Jones, associate professor of chemistry.
