A design project by School of Architecture Director Chris Jarrett and Associate Professor of Architecture Peter Wong has received the Citation Award in the Activate North Carolina 2016 Urban Housing Competition. Activate North Carolina is a program of AIANC, the state chapter of the American Institute of Architects, that seeks to engage architects, designers, and the public in shaping their communities.
The 2016 Urban Housing Competition challenged participants to submit design proposals for residential and office/retail space in an area along the South Mint Street corridor in uptown Charlotte. The international competition was open to architecture professionals and students from across the world; the four-member jury recognized three entries, including a proposal from the regional firm Clark Nexsen (receiving the Honor Award) and the Amsterdam (Netherlands)-based firm Radar Architecture & Arts (receiving the Merit Award).
Receiving the Citation Award, R.A.W. (Residents at Work) is the name of the project submitted by the UNC Charlotte DesignLAB team, led by Jarrett and Wong with architecture graduate students Stewart Cartmell and Velina Paneva and undergraduate students Brendon Bryant and Rafael Lopez. R.A.W. proposes a residential-industrial urban community, inspired by the history of the area’s Wilmore neighborhood, that seeks to address issues of gentrification and homogenization with affordable apartment and live/work leasing options.
