Department of Theatre Chair Lynne Conner recently published an essay on the dance critic John Martin in the Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism. Dr. Conner is an expert on the early years of dance criticism in the United States and has written extensively about the relationship between newspaper dance criticism and the development of the field of American modern dance.

The Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism is the most comprehensive resource available for the study of the Modernist period and includes essays in Literature, Architecture, Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Theatre, Film and Intellectual Currents. In addition to her own essay, Dr. Conner’s 1997 book, Spreading the Gospel of the Modern Dance: Newspaper Dance Criticism in the United States, 1850-1934 is cited as a source for an essay published in the encyclopedia written by dance scholar Mark Franko (“Dance and Writing”).
