Some 30 students from the College of Arts + Architecture, the College of Computing and Informatics, and the College of Engineering are designing and fabricating statement pieces, costumes, and garments that will be worn by professors and friends at the first annual Statement Making, a fashion show to be held Thursday, April 27, in the Belk Plaza at UNC Charlotte. Statement Making has been organized by Johanna Okerlund, a graduate student in computer science, and recent art alumna Madison Kate Dunaway.
“The purpose of the fashion show is to initiate interdisciplinary collaboration,” said Dunaway, who graduated from UNC Charlotte in December and will attend Parsons School of Design next year. “We see Statement Making as an annual event that will continue to ignite cross-curricular interactions.”
Student makers were given a total of $3000 in grants to purchase supplies to make their work, which will be modeled by Department of Art & Art History Chair Eldred Hudson, Associate Professor of Art Heather Freeman, Storrs Fabrication Labs Director Alex Cabral, and dance major Makenta Vincent, among others.
The fashion show is being planned and produced in partnership with the Fashion Management course at The Art Institute of Charlotte, taught by Mike Watson. It will take place from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm outdoors in Belk Plaza. There is no admission charge.
