How did you first get interested in dance?
I have always been interested in the arts, and have been involved in one or the other. I began dancing around 7, but decided to pursue dance as a profession at age 13. I grew up in church, and dancing in the church was too easy and was not very exciting to me. I joined a Christian dance team that surprised me in terms of technique and challenge, and I loved it. The experience rekindled my love for dance and motivated me to apply to UNC School of the Arts in 2019 for my last year of high school, to which I was accepted.

What kind of career do you hope to have?
Throughout the years, my goals have changed. What I used to dream of, which was performing, is now wanting to choreograph and stage performances for audiences around the world. I also found a love for teaching dance, and sharing my passion with dancers and non dancers alike. While I love teaching dance, I also really enjoy speaking about the different parts of dance (movement, how to choreograph, etc). I also would love to teach English as a second language and help students learn how to read. I also would love to become a translator in any language I become fluent in. My career path seems to revolve around teaching, so I'll probably stay around this career!

What is your favorite thing about the dance department?
I appreciate the support and mentoring I get from my teachers. I also love how understanding they are of how life in school and work can be difficult, but the goal for both the student and the teacher is success. I feel very supported here.

Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community?
I participate in Zion Center for Worship in the Arts as a teacher and dancer, as well as Worship Movement in Huntersville as a teacher and choreographer. Last year, I participated as an ASL translator at Open Door Studios for their production of 'The Grinch'. I find myself in other different areas of art in the community throughout the year, so it varies.

When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?
If I am not in class, working, or studying, I like learning different languages and trying different food cuisines. I am currently learning Korean and Spanish, but also have experience in American Sign Language and wish to become an ASL translator!
