Dr. Kristi Hardman is an assistant professor of music theory at UNC Charlotte. Professor Hardman received her Ph.D. in Music Theory from the Graduate Center, City University of New York, in 2022. She also holds bachelor’s degrees in music and education from the University of Manitoba and a master’s degree in music theory from the University of British Columbia.
Her research centers on using computer-assisted methods of analysis to develop a greater understanding of the intersections between changing sound qualities and our experiences of rhythm, meter, and form. Other research interests include text/music relations, issues of transcription, the ethics of analysis, and music theory pedagogy. She is particularly interested in Indigenous and popular music made in North America. Professor Hardman has presented research in these areas at regional, national, and international conferences, including the Society for Ethnomusicology, Society for Music Theory, Analytical Approaches to World Music, and the International Association for the Study of Popular Music.
Before coming to UNC Charlotte, Professor Hardman taught music theory and aural skills at Colgate University, Hunter College, and the University of British Columbia. Prior to teaching at the college level, she taught music to K–12 students in public schools, as well as private lessons on clarinet and guitar.
Professor Hardman is also engaged with the broad discipline of music scholarship, serving as a co-secretary of the Society for Ethnomusicology Music Analysis Special Interest Group and as a member of the Engaged Music Theory Working Group. She previously served as an associate editor for the Analytical Approaches to World Music journal.
