Give a little general information about yourself: how did you become interested in theatre?

In fifth grade, I played Gracie Shinn in my school’s production of The Music Man, where I realized that I never wanted to leave the stage. Throughout middle school and high school, I continued my involvement with the performing arts and was involved in band, choir, plays, and musicals. I entered my freshmen year at UNC Charlotte as a theatre minor and was completely committed to attending medical school. However, when I finally realized that nothing could surpass my love of theatre, I switched my major. Deciding to pursue theatre professionally was the best decision I ever made.

What kind of career do you hope to have?

I am planning on pursuing a Masters of Fine Art in Lighting and Scenic Design, focusing on live performance. With my MFA, I would love to teach design courses at the graduate and/or undergraduate level and design for professional theaters. Through my studies and career, I strive to demonstrate that an occupation in the performing arts is viable and rewarding.

What is your favorite thing about the Department of Theatre?

The faculty! There are few departments that give students the opportunity to work so closely with professionals. The theatre faculty is consistently working in theatres all over the world, and provides students with hands on experience, guidance, and opportunities. Without their support, I would not be where I am.

Do you participate in any community activities or work in the Charlotte arts community? If so, please describe.

I am currently in the process of working as the lighting designer for UNC Charlotte’s production of Everybody, which is tremendously exciting. I am also beginning to work on a design project for the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte.

When you are not in class, studying, or working, what do you like to do for fun?

I really enjoy hiking, camping, boating, and anything that involves being outside. I also love cooking, listening to music, spending time with friends, and hanging out with my cat!
